GastroPanel® Blood Test for Dyspepsia, Atrophic Gastritis and Stomach Cancer Risk

Most people experience stomach discomfort, upsets, or abdominal pain at some point throughout their lives and in the majority of cases these are caused by transient issues or functional dyspepsia. Chronic stomach conditions however can indicate that an individual has a more significant health issue, and it’s necessary to conduct diagnostic tests. But these issues can be difficult to diagnose due to non-specific symptoms and limited tools available to investigate the cause. GastroPanel is a straightforward, early-detection blood test for gastric problems designed to help identify pathologies of the stomach mucosa such as chronic atrophic gastritis, Helicobacter pylori infection, and risk of stomach cancer, that can help healthcare providers implement successful treatment plans.

GastroPanel® (Pepsinogen I, Pepsinogen II, Gastrin-17 and H. pylori IgG) All-In-One Blood Test

Every year in the UK, some 4,000 people lose their battle with stomach cancer. With multiple risk factors that include Helicobacter pylori infection, older age, smoking, dietary and lifestyle factors, and family history, gastric cancer is diagnosed in around 6,500 people each year and carries a 5 year survival rate of just 21%. Clinical investigations and routine blood tests for gastric problems make up a significant proportion of a physicians work load, but often lead to unsustainable referrals for gastroscopy of patients that have no significant pathology. On the other hand, due to the vague nature of some stomach diseases such as gastric cancer, the early stages can be easily missed leading to late stage and less curable disease presentation in acute settings. GastroPanel is a simple blood test to detect atrophic gastritis to help identify those individuals at highest risk and triage patients for referral for further investigations. Atrophic gastritis is a precancerous condition of the gastric mucosa – a condition that, according to British and European guidelines, requires careful monitoring by surveillance endoscopy due to the progressive nature of the disease.

What Gastric Conditions Can The GastroPanel® Blood Test Detect?

GastroPanel is a highly effective blood test for evaluating gastric symptoms, helping triage patients before referral based on disease risk. The non-invasive blood test for atrophic gastritis assists in diagnosing dyspepsia and directs patients to appropriate treatment according to the findings. In a primary care setting GastroPanel helps medical professionals identify priority cases for gastroscopy based on risk of gastric cancer, gastric ulcers, acid dysregulation, and deficiencies of vitamins and micronutrients. GastroPanel helps identify and rule out H. pylori infection, atrophic gastritis (loss of functioning gastric glands), achlorhydria, and helps determine the need for referral to gastroscopy, from a single blood sample.

Dyspepsia and gastroesophageal reflux disease are common conditions that can be investigated with the GastroPanel blood test, as well as related conditions such as malabsorption and anaemia. Performing a blood test for atrophic gastritis or H. pylori infection before gastroscopy is quicker, easier, and less invasive, helping preserve endoscopic procedures for those who need it, whilst delivering efficient and cost-effective patient flows.

The GastroPanel® Blood Test for Gastric Problems is Ideal for GPs, Community Diagnostic Hubs and Outpatient Clinics

GastroPanel is a useful blood test for stomach conditions that make up a large percentage of GP consultations. GPs and diagnostic clinics can use GastroPanel to investigate chronic dyspeptic symptoms in order to triage patients who need further investigation. The non-invasive blood test can be used at the point of care and is quick and easy, providing accurate and actionable results with a fast turnaround time. This makes diagnosing H. pylori infection, autoimmune gastritis, and atrophic gastritis, more accessible to a larger number of patients awaiting medical care. As a first-line test, GastroPanel is simpler, less expensive, and less invasive than an upper GI endoscopy, making it a preferable option to patients and providers.

What Are The Advantages of the GastroPanel® Blood Test?

Through simultaneous measurement of four stomach specific biomarkers BIOHIT has developed an atrophic gastritis blood test that adds value to the clinical investigation of dyspepsia, helping physicians determine the need for gastroscopy. By taking a non-invasive, multi-functional and cost-effective approach, a GastroPanel blood test can select patients for gastroscopy and endoscopic surveillance based on their need, by identifying risk factors that can otherwise only be determined using invasive means.

GastroPanel is Accurate

According to a recent meta-analysis by Zagari et al (2017), GastroPanel is a reliable diagnostic tool for atrophic gastritis, with a pooled sensitivity and specificity of 74.7% (95% CI 62.0%–84.3%) and 95.6% (95% CI 92.6%–97.4%), respectively. Considering a median prevalence of atrophic gastritis of 27%, GastroPanel has a negative predictive value of 91% and a positive predictive value of 86%. Therefore, GastroPanel can be used to non-invasively rule out, and identify atrophic gastritis, allowing endoscopy resources to be focused towards individuals at the highest risk, and providing a rationale for endoscopic confirmation and surveillance.

Simple Non-Invasive Blood Test For Primary Care And Screening Settings

Unlike traditional endoscopic or biopsy methods, the GastroPanel test is a simple blood test, making it a less invasive option for patients. A blood test for atrophic gastritis and dyspepsia, can even be done using a simple finger-prick blood sample making the test ideal for testing large numbers of patients by primary caregivers outside the hospital setting.

Helps Manage Patient Flows And Referrals

Early detection of gastrointestinal conditions such as atrophic gastritis and gastric cancer can significantly increase the chances of successful treatment. The GastroPanel blood test can detect these conditions in the early stages, allowing for earlier intervention. Results are categorised into three risk profiles which indicate the need for referral. These quick and easy lab tests for gastritis, can reveal the risk of peptic ulcer disease, gastric cancer and other stomach-related problems, allowing for an immediate referral for further investigation. At the same time, when the GastroPanel test is negative, it reveals a non-atrophic stomach which can be managed more conservatively in primary care without the need for immediate referral.

Helps Identify Patients Most At Risk Of Gastric Cancer to Target Endoscopy Resources

The GastroPanel test can help detect a range of gastrointestinal conditions, such as Helicobacter pylori infection, atrophic gastritis, and gastric cancer risk. It does this by providing a more comprehensive assessment of a patient’s gastrointestinal health first time. A blood test to detect stomach cancer risk is fast, efficient, less invasive and more accessible than a gastroscopy, and can help allocate expensive and limited endoscopy resources to those patients who require specialist investigations and biopsies.

Technology that provides choice for labs and clinics

As a healthcare provider, diagnosing patients suffering from non-specific abdominal pain can be made far simpler using GastroPanel. Compatible with a range of automated ELISA processors, as well as a rapid test option for point-of-care clinic use and laboratories, a blood test for chronic atrophic gastritis can now be performed rapidly and accurately giving comprehensive results in as little as 20 minutes.

GastroPanel® Gastric Blood Test FAQs

What is the GastroPanel® blood test?

GastroPanel blood test screens patients and guides their referral for endoscopy. It measures the levels of specific biomarkers in the blood, including pepsinogen I, pepsinogen II, gastrin-17, and Helicobacter pylori antibodies. These biomarkers provide information about the health of the stomach mucosa and the presence of H. pylori infection.

How does GastroPanel® work?

GastroPanel can be employed by laboratories and health clinics and is based on two technologies according to clinical need. Laboratories can choose from ELISA format or quantitative lateral flow test format to analyse the four plasma markers of GastroPanel – Pepsinogen I, Pepsinogen II, Gastrin 17 and H. pylori IgG antibodies. For clinics and GP practices, GastroPanel Quick Test NT is available as a finger-prick quantitative lateral flow test for the immediate analysis of the four plasma markers from a capillary blood sample.

Does the blood test detect stomach cancer?

GastroPanel is not a stomach cancer test. It is a test for the detection of the pre-cancerous condition of the gastric mucosa called atrophic gastritis which is the greatest known risk factor for gastric cancer and requires endoscopic follow up and biopsy analysis. Medical professionals carrying out the comprehensive stomach blood test will be able to interpret the test results quickly with the help of an interpretive algorithm (GastroSoft®), so patients can be triaged according to the risk and referred as required.

Is GastroPanel a blood test for gastritis?

Detecting inflammation of the stomach mucosa (gastritis) with a blood test is not easy, but the GastroPanel blood test can help. GastroPanel measures Helicobacter pylori IgG antibodies to help diagnose H. pylori infection, which if present can cause superficial gastritis. But GastroPanel also identifies the chronic phase of gastritis where the gastric mucosa has reached an advanced stage called Atrophic Gastritis. GastroPanel blood test results report the concentration of Pepsinogen I, Pepsinogen II, Gastrin 17 and H. pylori IgG antibodies in a blood sample, producing a comprehensive report for the healthcare professional to take swift action.

Is there a blood test for peptic ulcer disease (PUD)?

Currently, there is no specific blood test for peptic ulcer disease (PUD), however GastroPanel blood tests for gastric atrophy will indicate whether an individual is at risk of PUD based on the assessment of H. pylori infection, atrophic gastritis, and intragastric acidity.

How does GastroPanel help explore stomach acidity?

When a fasting blood sample is tested using GastroPanel and the results show negative H. pylori IgG antibody status, low gastrin-17 levels, and normal pepsinogen profile, it is indicative of high acid output which may be useful for determining the appropriate use of proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy and investigating acid related disorders such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD). Conversely, GastroPanel also detects atrophic gastritis which causes hypochlorydria (low acid output) or achlorhydria (no acid output) which is an indication for gastroscopy and may be a contraindication for PPI therapy. Therefore, GastroPanel may prove to be a useful surrogate blood test for stomach acidity.
