Pancreatic dysfunction

Pancreatic dysfunction, or exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), is a condition that results in poor digestion and malabsorption of key nutrients. This includes fats, carbohydrates and proteins. The loss of pancreatic function and subsequent deficiency of digestive enzymes leads to a range of symptoms, such as diarrhoea and weight loss. EPI is also associated with numerous clinical illnesses that predispose the condition such as chronic pancreatitis and cystic fibrosis.

Diagnosing pancreatic dysfunction

These symptoms often mimic those of other common gastrointestinal conditions, which makes diagnosis difficult by clinical assessment alone. BIOHIT provides essential kits to test for pancreatic elastase or amylase for diagnosis and monitoring of EPI. These can be used alongside faecal calprotectin testing to eliminate other organic causes of symptoms, such as IBD.
